ON THE OUTSIDE
Appearance: Small and meek of stature, at first glance, Marie is little more then a child, especially considering her short legs and tiny feet. Her expressions betray her as a woman with a will of her own, a frown is painted across that thin mouth, more often then a smile. Two large, telling eyes are positioned above that mouth, almost always glaring, a smile never warms their cold stare.
Her red hair remains tied back, loosely, so as not to get caught by stray fingers, above a nurse uniform. Plain white and usually spotless, a blouse buttoned up to her chin and a knee length skirt, contrasting with flat, black shoes. Though she is almost flat chested, Marie has visible curves, though she makes no effort to emphasize her gender, wearing no makeup and walking with a male stride, carefully practiced over the years. Her attitude puts off any unwanted attention, and has proved useful over the years.
ON THE INSIDE
Personality: Marie has a tendency to be two faced, sometimes sweet and warm of demeanor, her honeyed words had been known to soften the hardest of hearts (namely, her father's). At others, she is sharp and irritable, with an almost permanent scowl stretched across her mouth.
The woman knows when to be professional, and she is adept at holding lists of tasks in her head, all flowing seamlessly together. Once an aspiring matron, Marie's training has never left her and could prove useful to the working team. Though she doesn't often show it, Marie has a soft spot for the children, never having been able to keep her own.
She has a great sense of duty, having moved across the seas to keep an eye on her brother, knowing that it hurts the family when they receive little word of him. In a way, having the opportunity to look after her brother and others like him gains her acceptance among the males of her family.
Likes: Books (especially romance or sci-fi), computers, science
Dislikes: Music, sport, dance, sewing, cooking
Habits: Sighing exaggeratedly when impatiently waiting for a response, wringing hands when talking
Quirks: Marie almost always has a pencil placed behind her ear
IN THE PAST
History: Whilst her father and brother went off gallivanting around the world, Marie was left to tend to the house, shadowing her mother like a ghost, dressed like a porcelain doll. All petticoats and smiles, the young girl was shaped in her mother's image, following a strict routine which allowed little room for freedom. Marie was the type of child to host tea-parties at the bottom of the garden, but later be told off for the grass-stains.
As she grew older, Marie trashed the skirts and began to shape a path of her own. Marie also began to notice the opposite gender, as all women do. She fell pregnant, as many girl's her age seemed to, and gave birth at the age of fifteen, to a girl. The child was named Danika and taken in by Marie's oldest cousin, Dafne, for Marie to go on to medical school. Dafne herself grew fond of the child, and as Marie moved on to work, it was no surprise to the family when the child was adopted. Because of this, Marie transferred to Berlin, tired of her history weighing her down. Despite this move, she remained close to her mother, until her mother's suicide some years later. The suicide was prompted by the sectioning of Marie's sibling, Kit. Driven half mad during work, the man was incarcerated overseas, prompting Marie's further move to the Asylum.
The woman was soon offered a job and gladly took it, she remains there to this day.
Relationships with Parents: Marie remains close to her father, exchanging phone calls daily.
Relationships with siblings: Not close to her half brother and somewhat awkward with Kit, Katherin and Marie are quite close, though distant from each other.
Relationship with offspring: As aunt to niece. Danika and Marie exchange letters each month.
BACK TO THE PRESENT
Role play Sample:
Whispers at midnight. A few minutes past midnight, anyway. A great, golden hound lopped after the woman, leaving heavy paw prints in the damp soil. Medicine satchel bouncing against her sore hip, the young nurse was on her way back from her shift, lungs aching from the walk. Marie always did work herself hard, a habit that she had gained from her mother during childhood. Now a grown woman, Marie could indulge herself, to go through her door and slip between cotton sheets, to fall asleep without effort.
A trip sent those thoughts scattering, like marbles, into the dirt. Below her lay a man, sprawled out on the grass, his tongue lolled out drunkenly, his eyes had rolled back into his head, the whites glaring up at the sky with an evil stare. Clambering to her feet, Marie peered down into the face of the idiot, small nose wrinkling in disgust as the man belched. Quite obviously, Uncle had been at the larder. Stepping over his outstretched hand, Marie edged around the front door and made her way to the kitchen.
ooc: As with Kit, I can add more to this.
The magic phrase: In a world as big as this it's not hard to feel alone...
